Bees in Your Home, Roof or Garden?

Finding bees clustered on a fence post, massing in a chimney, or hearing a low hum from inside your walls is an unsettling experience. Honey bees are remarkable creatures — but a swarm or an established colony in your property needs professional attention before it becomes a much bigger problem.

In Leeds, honey bee swarms appear most commonly between April and July. A swarm may settle temporarily on a tree, gate or windowsill for a day or two before scouts locate a permanent nest site — and your chimney, loft space or cavity wall may be exactly what they're looking for. Left unchecked, a colony can grow to 50,000 bees and produce significant quantities of honeycomb inside your walls, causing structural damage and attracting secondary pests.

⚠ Allergy risk: If anyone in your household has a known allergy to bee stings, do not approach the nest. Call Apex Pest Control Ltd for professional advice before taking any action.

Nathan Assesses Your Nest or Swarm

Your local Leeds technician visits to identify the species, locate the nest, and assess the safest method of removal. This matters — honey bees require a different approach to wasps or bumblebees.

Humane Colony Removal and Relocation

Where possible, the honey bee colony is carefully removed and rehomed with a local beekeeper through the BBKA Yorkshire network. This keeps the bees alive and gives them a proper home.

Understanding Honey Bees — What You Need to Know

Apr – Jul Swarm season in Yorkshire

Why Do Honey Bees Swarm?

Swarming is the honey bee colony’s natural method of reproduction. When a colony outgrows its nest space, the old queen leaves with around half the worker bees to find a new home. In Leeds and West Yorkshire, swarms are most common between April and July — peak activity in May and June.

A swarm looks alarming but is usually at its least defensive during this phase, typically resting for 24–48 hours while scout bees find a new nest site.

Where Do Honey Bees Nest in Buildings?

Bees can enter through a gap of just a few millimetres. In older Leeds housing — Victorian terraces, cavity-wall semis, stone-built properties — there are many suitable entry points. Common nest sites:

  • Chimney stacks and flue voids
  • Cavity walls (soft brick mortar)
  • Loft spaces and attic voids
  • Behind roof fascias and soffits
  • Beneath garden sheds and decking

Are Honey Bees Protected by Law?

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are not listed on the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 Schedule 5, so they have no specific species protection. However, the Animal Welfare Act 2006 requires unnecessary suffering be avoided — meaning extermination is not an appropriate first response. The Bees Act 1980 also gives APHA powers to issue control orders for notifiable bee diseases such as American Foulbrood.

The BPCA Code of Practice for Honey Bees (Issue 4, 2019) recommends relocation and BBKA referral before any lethal option is considered. Apex Pest Control Ltd follows this guidance on every job.

Honey Bees vs Wasps — How to Tell the Difference

🐝 Honey Bee

  • Golden-brown, hairy body
  • Rounded abdomen, furry thorax
  • Generally docile unless provoked
  • Carries pollen baskets on legs
  • Dies after stinging (barbed sting)

⚠ Common Wasp

  • Yellow and black, smooth shiny body
  • Narrow waist, no body hair
  • Aggressive, especially late summer
  • No pollen baskets
  • Can sting repeatedly

FAQs

Bee Removal Leeds — Frequently Asked Questions

Can bees be exterminated?

Not as a first option. Honey bees are beneficial pollinators responsible for a significant proportion of the UK’s food production. The Animal Welfare Act 2006 requires that unnecessary suffering be avoided, and the BPCA Code of Practice for Honey Bees (Issue 4, 2019) recommends relocation and BBKA referral before any lethal control is considered.

Why can’t bee colonies just be sprayed?

Standard insecticide sprays are not approved for use against honey bees except as a last resort where removal is structurally impossible. Spraying an established colony without removing the comb also leaves behind fermented honey and wax, which can cause significant structural damage and attract secondary infestations of rodents and beetles.

When is lethal control ever used?

In rare cases where a colony is located in a structural void that cannot be safely accessed for physical removal — and where the colony poses a direct, ongoing risk — lethal options may be considered as a last resort. This decision is always made on a case-by-case basis following a full site assessment.

What does BPCA guidance say about honey bee removal?

The British Pest Control Association’s Code of Practice for Honey Bees (Issue 4, 2019) is clear: referral to the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) should always be the first step, and relocation should be attempted before any lethal method is considered. Apex Pest Control Ltd follows this guidance on every job.

How do I know if I have honey bees or wasps?

The easiest way to tell is by appearance. Honey bees are golden-brown with a hairy body. Wasps are yellow and black with a smooth, shiny abdomen. Bumblebees are larger and rounder with thick, fuzzy colouring. The behaviour of the colony also differs — honey bee swarms are generally calm, while wasp nests (particularly in August and September) can be highly aggressive.

What does a honey bee look like compared to a wasp?

Honey bees are approximately 15mm long, golden-brown and visibly hairy. Wasps are similar in size but have clearly defined yellow and black banding on a smooth, narrow waist. Common wasps (Vespula vulgaris) are the species most frequently mistaken for honey bees.

What does a bee nest look like inside a wall?

You won’t usually see the nest itself — but signs include: a consistent stream of bees flying in and out of a single entry point, a low-frequency hum from inside the wall, dark staining on masonry around an entrance hole, or visible comb exposed at a gap. An established colony inside a wall void will produce significant quantities of honeycomb over time.

What time of year are bee swarms most common in Leeds?

In Leeds and across West Yorkshire, honey bee swarms are most commonly seen between April and July, with May and June being the peak months. Warmer spring days trigger swarming activity as colonies reach maximum population ahead of summer.

Is a bee swarm dangerous?

A honey bee swarm in transit — resting on a fence post, branch or external wall — is generally at its least aggressive. Bees in swarm mode have no nest to defend and are focused entirely on finding a new home. That said, any large concentration of bees presents a risk to anyone with a sting allergy, and should not be approached without professional advice.

What should I do if I see a bee swarm on my property?

Keep children and pets away from the area. Do not disturb the swarm — agitation increases the risk of stings. If the swarm is in an accessible outdoor location and causing no immediate risk, it may move on within 24–48 hours. If it remains after 48 hours, or has entered a building void, call Apex Pest Control Ltd for professional assessment.

Are honey bees aggressive?

Healthy honey bee colonies are generally non-aggressive outside their nest. A swarm cluster is the least defensive stage of the bee’s lifecycle. However, established colonies defending a nest site will sting if disturbed. Always treat any bee nest with respect and avoid blocking the entrance point.

What is the risk if someone in my household is allergic to bee stings?

Anaphylaxis — a severe allergic reaction — can occur rapidly following a bee or wasp sting in sensitised individuals. If a household member carries an EpiPen or has a diagnosed sting allergy, do not approach the nest under any circumstances. Call us immediately for professional assessment and interim safety advice.

How much does bee removal cost in Leeds?

We use fixed, transparent pricing with no call-out fee. The exact price depends on the location and accessibility of the nest or swarm, the size of the colony, and whether structural access is required. Call us on 0113 390 4270 or submit an enquiry and we’ll provide a clear quote before any work begins.

Is there a call-out fee?

No. Apex Pest Control Ltd does not charge a call-out fee. You’ll receive a fixed-price quote before we start any work, and you’ll only pay the agreed price — no hidden charges.

Does it take more than one visit?

Most honey bee swarm removals are completed in a single visit. Established colonies within structural voids may require a follow-up inspection depending on accessibility. Nathan will advise you on what to expect during the initial assessment.

What is included in the fixed price?

The fixed price covers the site survey, species identification, removal work, and aftercare advice. If structural access or specialist equipment is required, this will be discussed and agreed before any work begins. No surprises.

What happens to the bees after removal?

Wherever possible, the honey bee colony is carefully removed and rehomed with a local beekeeper through the BBKA Yorkshire network. Healthy honey bee colonies are a valuable resource — beekeepers actively want healthy swarms and established colonies, and will often collect them at no charge.

Where are the bees taken?

Colonies and swarms removed by Apex are rehomed through the Yorkshire Beekeepers Association network wherever possible. The bees are placed into a managed hive where they can continue to thrive and contribute to local pollination.

Can I keep the bees?

If you’re interested in beekeeping and would like to keep the colony yourself, we’d encourage you to contact the British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) at bbka.org.uk, or the Yorkshire BKA at ybka.org.uk for training and support. We’ll do our best to facilitate this where practical.

Do you work with local beekeepers in Leeds?

Yes. Apex Pest Control Ltd works with the local beekeeper community in Leeds and across West Yorkshire. Where a swarm collection by a beekeeper is the most appropriate solution, we’ll refer you directly — at no charge. Our priority is always to find the right outcome for the customer and the colony.
