Questions & Answers

What people actually want to know

Real questions from customers in Pontefract, Leeds and West Yorkshire — with straight answers about how we work, what we charge, and what to expect.

Our Pontefract technician Nathan Marshall operates across Pontefract, Leeds and West Yorkshire. We work on an appointment basis — call 0113 390 4270 and we will agree a visit time that suits you. We respond to all enquiries the same working day.
Rats in a property are serious — they gnaw cables, spread disease, and breed quickly. Call us immediately on 0113 390 4270. While we cannot always attend the same day, we prioritise active rodent infestations and will aim to get Nathan to you as fast as possible. In the meantime, we can advise you over the phone on what not to do (handling droppings without protection, disturbing nesting areas) so you do not make the situation worse before we arrive.
Yes. We are open Monday to Friday 8am–7pm and Saturday to Sunday 8am–1pm. Weekend appointments are available and popular with customers who cannot take time off work. Call 0113 390 4270 to check availability.
Most of our treatments include a follow-up visit as standard — for example, rat and mouse control includes two visits as part of the fixed price. If activity persists after a completed treatment programme, call us and we will assess the situation. Pests returning is often a sign of a new entry point or a different infestation source, both of which Nathan can identify and address.
We use fixed, published prices — no call-out fee, no hidden extras. The price quoted over the phone is the price you pay. Rat and mouse treatments start from £160 including two visits. Wasp nest treatment from £80. Ant treatment from £85. All current prices are on our prices page.
Some companies separate the visit charge from the treatment charge, so the headline price looks lower than it is. With Apex, there is no call-out fee — the price we quote covers the technician visiting and carrying out the treatment. You will always know the full cost before anyone sets foot on your property.
Worth checking: does their quote include more than one visit? Rat and mouse infestations almost always require at least two visits — the first to lay bait or traps, the second to assess activity, replenish bait and confirm the problem is resolving. A single-visit quote for rodents is often not a complete treatment. Our rat and mouse price includes two visits as standard. We also provide a written report after each visit, entry point advice, and proofing recommendations — all included.
Some situations do carry a higher price — loft wasp nest removal is £120 rather than the standard £80, for example, because of the access involved and protective equipment required. For commercial properties, pricing is bespoke because every site is different. We will always confirm the exact price before we book the visit, so there are no surprises on the day.
Yes. Nathan Marshall, our Pontefract technician, holds RSPH Level 2 Award in Pest Management and is Lantra accredited for pesticide application. Apex Pest Control Ltd is a member of the BPCA (British Pest Control Association) and NPTA (National Pest Technicians Association), CHAS accredited, and carries £5 million public liability insurance. All technicians are DBS checked.
The BPCA is the UK's leading professional body for pest management. Members must demonstrate competence, hold appropriate qualifications, use approved products correctly, and adhere to a code of conduct. If you use a non-member, you have no independent body to raise a complaint with if something goes wrong. BPCA membership also means treatments are carried out in compliance with the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU), which matters if you have children, pets, or wildlife on or near your property.
All products we use are approved for professional use in the UK and applied in accordance with COSHH regulations. Nathan will always advise you on any precautions — for example, keeping children and pets out of treated areas for a specified period, or not disturbing bait stations. Rodenticide bait stations are tamper-resistant, which significantly reduces the risk to non-target animals. We follow CRRU guidance on rodenticide placement, which is a legal requirement for professional pest controllers.
Just ask — we are happy to provide copies of our insurance certificate, BPCA membership confirmation, or Nathan's qualifications on request. Commercial clients often require this for audit purposes and we routinely supply full compliance documentation as part of our service.
The goal is always full elimination, not just knockback. Our approach targets the source — not just the visible signs. For rodents, that means bait stations at active runs and burrow entrances, combined with identification of how they are getting in. For wasps, we treat the nest directly. For ants, we target the colony, not just foraging workers. Nathan will tell you honestly after the first visit whether one treatment cycle is likely to resolve it, or whether further visits are needed.
Consumer products are limited in both the active ingredient concentration and where they can legally be placed. Professional-grade rodenticides and insecticides are significantly more effective. More importantly, getting rid of pests is as much about where you place treatment as what you use. Nathan will identify the activity routes, harbourage areas and entry points that a homeowner typically cannot locate — and place treatment accordingly. We also advise on environmental factors (food sources, access points, harbourage) that will cause the problem to return if not addressed.
After the first visit Nathan will explain what you should expect to see — for rodents, activity may actually increase briefly as animals encounter bait for the first time, before declining. He will leave contact details and you can call or message with updates. On the follow-up visit he will assess bait take, check for fresh activity, and confirm whether the infestation is resolving. Every visit ends with a written treatment report so you have a clear record.
Proofing is part of every rodent treatment — Nathan will identify the entry points during the visit and advise you on what needs sealing, and how. Basic proofing advice is included. For more extensive proofing works (mesh installation, air brick covers, gap filling under door frames) we can quote separately. This is highly recommended — without sealing entry points, a property that has had rats once is at higher risk of repeat infestation.
Do not attempt to remove it yourself. A mature wasp nest in summer can contain 3,000–5,000 wasps and disturbing it without the right protective equipment and insecticide will provoke an aggressive mass response. Call us on 0113 390 4270 — treatment is quick, effective, and from £80. Nathan will treat the nest directly, usually resolving it within 24–48 hours.
Yes — loft wasp nest treatment is £120 rather than £80, because of the enclosed space, heat, and the full protective equipment required to work safely in a loft. Wall cavity nests are also £80 and treated via the entry hole. If the nest is in an unusual location — chimney, underground, inside a wall — Nathan will assess on arrival and confirm pricing before starting.
In most cases, no. Once treated, the nest will naturally die off and collapse over winter. Wasps do not reuse old nests the following year, so there is no need to remove it. If the nest is in a location where you need it removed for other reasons — a loft conversion, for example — Nathan can advise on timing and safe removal once the colony is confirmed dead.
It can — and yes, it changes everything. Bees are a protected and ecologically vital species. We do not exterminate bee colonies. If you have a swarm or an established colony, we work with local beekeepers to arrange humane relocation wherever possible. Call us and describe what you are seeing — we can help you identify the species and advise the right course of action. Bee removal is quoted on inspection as it depends on location and colony size.
A commercial contract with Apex starts with a free site survey — Nathan visits your premises, assesses the risk profile, identifies any current activity, and designs a bespoke treatment and monitoring plan. You receive scheduled visits, full written reports after every visit, and documentation that satisfies Environmental Health, EHO audits, and food hygiene inspections. Call 0113 390 4270 to arrange your free survey.
Yes — call us immediately on 0113 390 4270. We understand the business risk an EHO visit represents. We will prioritise getting Nathan to your premises, carry out treatment, and provide you with a written treatment report and risk assessment that demonstrates you have taken prompt, professional action. This documentation is important — it shows the inspector that the issue was identified and addressed by a qualified, accredited contractor.
Restaurants, cafés, takeaways, hotels, care homes, schools, offices, warehouses, food production facilities, retail units, landlords with HMOs, and housing associations. Any business that has a duty of care to staff, customers or residents to maintain a pest-free environment. If you are a landlord, note that under the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018, a serious pest infestation can render a property legally unfit — we can provide the documentation to demonstrate you have acted responsibly.
Commercial contracts are bespoke — pricing depends on your premises size, the number of scheduled visits required (typically monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly), the pest risks present, and whether reactive call-out cover is included. We will confirm exact pricing after the free site survey, before you commit to anything. There are no hidden extras and all visits and reports are included in the agreed contract price.
For a single mouse, DIY traps often work. But if you are hearing scratching regularly, finding droppings in multiple locations, or seeing activity for more than a few days, you almost certainly have an established infestation — and that needs professional treatment. Mice breed at a rate of 5–10 offspring every three weeks. A small problem becomes a large one very quickly. The same applies to ant infestations — consumer products treat foragers, not the colony, so the problem keeps returning.
It matters significantly. Mouse droppings are small (3–6mm, like dark grains of rice). Rat droppings are much larger (12–18mm, like large dark pellets). Rats are more destructive — they gnaw through structural materials, pipework and cables, and carry Weil's disease (leptospirosis). The treatment approach, bait type, and station placement differ between the two species. If you are unsure, call us and describe what you are seeing — Nathan can often identify the species from a description before he visits.
Mice are nocturnal and rarely seen unless numbers are high. Seeing one mouse during the day is often a sign there are many more active at night. Check for droppings along skirting boards, behind appliances, under the sink, and in kitchen cupboard corners. A strong musty smell is also a sign. Nathan will carry out a thorough inspection of the property during the first visit to assess the scale of the infestation before starting treatment.
