The earliest recorded mention of Gleadless dates back to 1307, referred to as “Gladeleys in the parish of Handesworth” during a land transaction between Jociamus le Scrop and Henry de Wodetorp. By the end of the 17th century, much of the woodland in the area had been cleared for farming and small-scale coal mining, marking the beginning of its industrial involvement.
The 19th century brought further development to Gleadless. The 1851 census recorded a population of 740, which grew to 2,306 by 1881, largely due to increased demand for coal and the establishment of Birley East Colliery in 1887. The introduction of free education in the 1890s led to the opening of Gleadless Primary School in 1898, reflecting the community’s commitment to education. The extension of the Sheffield Tramway to nearby Intake in the early 20th century improved connectivity, integrating Gleadless more closely with the expanding city.
In 1921, Gleadless officially became part of the City of Sheffield under the Sheffield Extension Order. This incorporation led to significant urban development, with agricultural lands being transformed into housing estates to accommodate the growing population.
